Fairtrade farmer and community leader Bassema Barahmeh, along with Canaan Fair Trade's marketing assistant Lamis Zamzam, were denied visas for business travel to the UK for Fairtrade Fortnight just 2 days before they were due to leave. We asked them to record a few short interviews so that their British and Irish customers could hear more about them and their lives.
'Fairtrade tea farmers, workers, producer members of Fairtrade Africa, are unanimous in our decision to reject this unequal partnership with the Sainsbury’s Foundation. We believe it will strip us of rights and benefits attained over the years under the Fairtrade system.'
Read the open letter from farmers who will be affected by today's launch of Sainsbury’s Sustainability Standards programme.
BREAK YOUR FAST THIS RAMADAN WITH FAIRLY TRADED MEDJOUL DATES FROM PALESTINE
Medjoul dates are known as the ‘king of dates’ because of their plump flesh and rich caramel flavour. They are sourced from Palestinian farms around the ancient city of Jericho, an occupied area where vast tracts of land have been illegally confiscated by the Israeli government.
By buying Zaytoun CIC Medjoul dates this Ramadan you are showing solidarity with Palestinian farming families in the Jordan Valley, helping them to make a sustainable living and face the challenges of the military occupation and expanding Israeli settlements.
